Newcastle United announced that defender Paul Dummett has agreed on a one-year contract extension, keeping him at the club for the 2022/23 season.
Dummett’s current contract was due to expire at the end of this season, but he has now become the latest player to extend his deal at St. James’ Park.
Swiss stopper Fabian Schar agreed on a new deal last week, and now Dummett has followed him in putting pen to paper.
Dummett, now 30, has come through the ranks at St. James’ Park, and despite only making three appearances this season, Eddie Howe was keen to tie him down long term. Dummett, who can play left-back or centre-half, fills one of the homegrown needs in Newcastle’s squad, and he is delighted to stay.
“This is a hugely exciting time for the football club and the city so I’m delighted to be committing another year here and staying at my boyhood club,” the Welsh international told the club’s website.
Born in Newcastle, Dummett joined United’s Academy aged eight and progressed through the ranks, eventually captaining the club’s Under-21 side and enjoying loan spells with Gateshead and St Mirren – winning the Scottish League Cup with The Buddies.
Dummett has also represented Wales on the international stage, qualifying through his grandfather. He made five Under-21 appearances before earning four full international caps.
Newcastle United Head Coach, Eddie Howe, said: “Paul is a consummate professional who has given so much to this club, and I’m delighted he will be staying with us.
“He is a player and a person I like very much. He leads by example both in the dressing room and on the pitch and I’m pleased to retain someone with his positive influence and defensive capabilities.”
Newcastle United are also continuing talks with another homegrown player in the shape of Sean Longstaff, and the club are hopeful he will also commit his future to the club.
After progressing through the youth ranks at the club, he had loan spells at Gateshead and Scottish side St Mirren. He made his Premier League debut in the 2013–14 season and scored his first Premier League goal against Liverpool on 19 October 2013. Dummett is a first-team regular for Newcastle United and was part of their promotion from the Championship in 2017.
As Newcastle’s first-choice left-back, Dummett started the 2014–15 season with Davide Santon injured and Massadio Haïdara on the bench. Dummett grabbed his second Magpies goal on 25 September 2014, scoring a late winner in extra-time against Crystal Palace in the League Cup.
Playing alongside captain Fabricio Coloccini in the centre of defence, Dummett helped Newcastle keep clean sheets in victories over Manchester City and West Bromwich Albion. On 12 January 2016, Dummett scored a 90th-minute equaliser against Manchester United in a match that ended in a 3–3 draw at St James’ Park. Since 2017, Dummett has often been deployed as a centre back and left-back.
